System Does Not Seem to Be Working: Solving Filtration Failure

Incorrect installation, filter bypass valve is open, or the main filter media is exhausted.

When you install a new filter system or replace cartridges, you expect an immediate improvement in water quality. If you don't notice a change, the system is failing to filter the water, and the cause is often a simple but critical oversight.

Top Reasons for Filtration Failure

Cause Diagnosis & Solution Pro Tip
1. Filter Bypass Valve is Open Most whole-house systems have a bypass valve to allow water flow during filter changes. If this valve is left open, water simply flows around the filter cartridges without being treated. Solution: Locate the bypass valve (often a lever or handle on the top of the unit) and ensure it is closed (in the "service" or "filter" position) and the main inlet/outlet valves are open.
2. Incorrect Filter Seating or Installation Filters must be properly seated to force water through the media, not around it. A missing or pinched O-ring or a filter inserted backward will allow water to bypass the media. Solution: Shut off the water and open the housing. Ensure the filter is oriented correctly (check the arrows) and seated perfectly into the housing cap or base. Lubricate and inspect the O-rings.
3. Main Filter Media is Exhausted If the system has been running for a long time without a change, the media (especially carbon or softening resin) is completely saturated and cannot absorb any more contaminants. Solution: Replace the filter cartridge immediately. Start keeping a strict replacement schedule based on the manufacturer's recommendations and your water usage.
4. Air Lock/Trapped Air Blockage A significant amount of air trapped in the lines can create a flow impediment, leading to very low flow, sputtering, and poor filtration quality. Solution: Refer to Article 4, and thoroughly purge the air from the system by running a downstream tap for several minutes or using the system's air release button.
5. Incorrect Filter Type Used If the system is meant to remove sediment but you installed a filter meant only for taste/odour, the system will fail to provide clarity. Solution: Confirm the required filter types and order (e.g., Sediment filter must come before Carbon filter) and install the correct cartridges.
